Additional Information about this counsellor or psychologist:
Counselling can be a way to grow while facing difficult circumstances. It can also be about building resources or heading in a new direction. In each case, you have the opportunity to become more yourself.
Whatever your motivation for seeking support, I believe in being fully present to each of my clients and accepting you non-judgmentally with the concerns you bring. I embrace a collaborative approach, which means that we work together to define what therapy will look like and the direction that your journey will take. Above all, I believe that each client’s personal experiences, values, and beliefs are of utmost importance and are to be honoured throughout the process.
My Approach
I approach counselling from an existential-humanistic framework. I also draw on other techniques when appropriate – from cognitive-behavioural, gestalt, and narrative therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness, to name a few. When it fits for the client, I like to be creative in counselling by incorporating the arts or writing.
I enjoy working with people to help them see their true value as a person, create a meaningful life, improve relationships, heal from their losses or traumas, overcome fears and addictions, explore new possibilities for growth in personal life and career, and generally make the changes they are hoping to make.
My Training and Experience
I have an MA in Counselling Psychology from UBC and completed a thesis about the use of metaphor in counselling sessions. I also have an MCS in Theology and the Arts from Regent College and a BA in Communication Studies from the University of Calgary.
I have done additional counselling training in approaches such as Morita Therapy and Therapeutic Enactment. I have a Basic Diploma in Existential Analysis, a particular theory of existential psychotherapy. Existential Analysis aims to help find a way of living that enables us to give inner consent to our actions. The approach defines leading a meaningful life as doing what one senses and recognizes as being valuable.
Prior to starting my private practice, I ran day treatment groups for people in recovery from addiction. I have also worked as a counsellor at a university counselling centre and have done individual counselling for people with addiction concerns.
Setting up a Session
You can contact me by phone or email to talk about the possibility of starting counselling and to ask me any questions you may have. I look forward to hearing from you and discussing whether I would be a good fit as your counsellor.
