Additional Information about this counsellor or psychologist:
My practice is open to persons of all ages, cultures and abilities. So, feel welcomed.
I have been practicing counselling psychology since 2001, and studying and intern counselling since 1997. I have a very diverse work background in a variety of community, medical-clinical, wilderness, and school settings.
My approach is strengths-based, humanistic, and often body-centered because involving all of you in therapy is what is most effective.
When appropriate to a person's reason for seeking counselling, I combine talk therapy with experiential, creative arts and somatic methods (sensing, breathing, body awareness and movement) to invite people to discover their true nature, make behavioral and life shifts and realize the goals they have for themselves.
This keeps the therapy process dynamic and engaged, allows a person to become more self-aware and conscious, and allows change to be experienced and processed by the whole brain.
By engaging your relationship with your body in therapy, you can experience "felt sense" shifts, that really must occur for therapy to be successful, in my and many other theorists' opinions.
I work with people who want support around:
- depression and anxiety (often go hand in hand)
- negative self-talk, shame, guilt
- figuring out how to move forward in life, and career shifts
- grief and loss
- creative expression - "stuck" artists
- issues related to parenting and child therapy
- relationship and intimacy
- healing the heart
- and many other reasons to seek counselling support.
My masters degree is in Somatic Counselling Psychology, and I have a specialization in and credentials in Dance-Movement Therapy (BC-DMT): the psychotherapeutic use of movement. Basically, feelings are designed to move through us, and when they get stuck, or we repress them (for good reasons!) this has a negative effect on our mental health. So in movement therapy, we use the tool of the body to work with emotional regulation, and integration of physical, mental, psychological and social aspects of ourselves. I am one of only a few fully trained movement-oriented therapists in Vancouver.
I lead classes and workshops at many organizations, counsellor training programs, and schools.
Important values to me in the counselling process are integrity, ethics, honesty, play-humour, creative thinking, embodiment and deep listening.
I enjoy working with people who take responsibility for what they can in the therapy relationship and are willing to work hard to get the results deserved from such a commitment to self.
Looking forward to speaking with you soon.
